Atlanta would be a nice place to live, if it weren't for the magic. When the magic is up, rogue mages cast their spells and monsters appear, while guns refuse to fire and cars fail to start. But then technology returns, and the magic recedes as unpredictably as it arose.
Kate Daniels works for the Order of Knights of Merciful Aid, officially as a liaison with the mercenary guild. Unofficially, she cleans up the paranormal problems no one else wants to handle - especially if they involve Atlanta's shapeshifting community. When she's called in to investigate a fight at the Steel Horse, a bar on the border between the territories of the shapeshifters and the necromancers, Kate quickly discovers that there's a new player in town. One who's been around for thousands of years - and who rode to war at the side of Kate's father. This foe may be too much even for Kate and Curran, the Beast Lord, to handle. Because this time Kate will be taking on family.
I really loved the third book in this series and I have heard that this was the book where things finally got steamy between Kate and Curran so I was beyond excited to see all of that sexual tension reach a peak.
As with the previous books, I love the characters in this series. Especially since Kate has been basically welcomed into the Pack’s grounds many times now I love seeing everyone in every single book. I also still really liked Kate’s character because she is just a fierce, loyal, and smart as ever. I think the thing I liked the most in this book was watching Kate work her magic. She has a lot of magic that we don’t always get to see because she is also a great fighter with her sword. However, I enjoyed that in this one we were able to see more of her magical abilities and just what she could do with them. I enjoyed the extra touch of a magical element in this one instead of just fighting with swords and teeth all the time. It made the fighting and the book seem more sophisticated in a way.
Of course I still love it when Kate and Curran are on the page together and I did enjoy the way this book started with Kate needing to finally understand Curran’s mating rituals. I understand why she was hurt in the beginning of this book but I knew she was going to have to get over that because Curran is freaking amazing. He is the ALPHA male to end all and I would gladly be his. I enjoyed that Curran finally let more of his feelings show in this book and we started to understand why he wanted Kate so much. I don’t want to ruin the plot of this book but I highly enjoyed the ending of this book because it showed the reader just how much Kate really cared as well. She spends so much time pushing Curran away for his safety or really her safety and it was nice to see her true colors and see just how far she was willing to go for Curran. I will say I was disappointed by the sex scene in this book because after waiting 4 books for it to happen I expected just a little bit more out of it. I guess I need to remember that this is an urban fantasy series and not a romance series but I was still a little let down.
Overall, I don’t want to spoil this for people who haven’t read it. I will say this book wasn’t better in my mind than the third book. The third book just had touches of everything and I loved the humor in that book whereas I felt this book was more serious and a lot of the humor that was growing in the earlier books fell to the wayside in this one. I want more of everything in the next book and I want the humor back!
